Instructions

Prepare the Trifles

  1. 1In a small bowl, gently toss the crumbled chocolate cake with the kirsch (if using) and cherry juice or syrup until lightly moistened. Be careful not to make it soggy.
  2. 2In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with a little sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. If not using pre-sweetened whipped cream, add sweetener to taste.
  3. 3Arrange the trifles in 6 individual parfait glasses, wine glasses, or small jars.
  4. 4Start with a layer of moistened chocolate cake crumbs at the bottom of each glass.
  5. 5Add a layer of whipped cream over the cake crumbs.
  6. 6Spoon a layer of cherries over the whipped cream.
  7. 7Repeat the layers – cake, cream, cherries – until the glasses are almost full, ending with a layer of whipped cream.

Garnish and Serve

  1. 1Sprinkle the top of each trifle generously with chocolate shavings.
  2. 2If desired, top each trifle with a maraschino cherry.
  3. 3Chill the trifles for at least 15-30 minutes before serving for the best flavor and texture.

Tips

  • For ease, use store-bought devil's food cake or chocolate pound cake. Ensure it's slightly dry to absorb liquid well.
  • If you don't have kirsch, you can substitute with a cherry liqueur or simply omit it for a non-alcoholic version.
  • Display these elegant trifles in clear glasses to showcase the beautiful layers of cake, cream, and cherries.
