Instructions

Preparation

  1. 1Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Grease a gratin or casserole dish generously with butter.
  2. 2In a small bowl, whisk together the miso paste with a few tablespoons of the heavy cream until smooth. Then whisk in the remaining cream.
  3. 3Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Sprinkle evenly with half of the sliced onions and half of the drained capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  4. 4Pour half of the miso- cream mixture over the first layer.
  5. 5Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, onions, and capers. Season again and pour the rest of the miso-cream mixture over the top.
  6. 6Drizzle the melted butter over the casserole and sprinkle with bread crumbs for a golden crust.

Cooking

  1. 1Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  2. 2If the top starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil.

Tips

  • For best results, slice the potatoes uniformly thin to ensure even cooking and texture.
  • Ensure the cream mixture is well seasoned; it is the primary flavor base for this vegetarian Jansson.
  • Allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes after baking so it holds its shape when served.
