Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 pc angel food cake(14-ounce; purchased; cut into 1-inch pieces)

Pudding Mixture

  • 96g vanilla instant pudding mix and pie filling(3.4-ounce package; includes pie filling; such as Jell-O)
  • 1 1/2 cup whole milk(or half-and-half)
  • 1 cup sour cream

Filling & Topping

  • 595g cherry pie filling(can; divided)
  • 227g whipped topping(container; frozen; thawed)
  • sliced almonds(optional; for garnish)

Instructions

Main

  1. Gather all ingredients.
  2. Place half of the angel food cake pieces in the bottom of a deep 8x8- or 9x9-inch baking dish in an even layer; spread 1 cup cherry pie filling over the cake and top with remaining cake pieces in an even layer.
  3. Whisk together the vanilla instant pudding mix, whole milk (or half-and-half), and sour cream in a large bowl until slightly thickened and smooth, about 1 minute.
  4. Pour the pudding mixture over the cake layers and spread evenly.
  5. Spread the thawed whipped topping over the pudding, dot with the remaining 1 cup cherry pie filling and use a toothpick or spoon to swoop and swirl the filling into the topping; refrigerate uncovered at least 8 hours and up to 12 hours, then garnish with sliced almonds.

Tips

  • Cut cake into 1-inch pieces ahead and keep covered to prevent drying before assembling.
  • Whisk pudding, milk, and sour cream vigorously for a minute until smooth to avoid lumps.
  • Chill at least 8 hours for best slicing; garnish with sliced almonds just before serving.
