Ingredients

Cake Base

  • 1lb white bread(crusts removed, sliced thinly)

Filling

  • 16oz cream cheese(softened)
  • 8oz crab meat(dungeness, picked over for shells)
  • 8oz smoked salmon(chopped)
  • 1/4 cup dill(fresh, chopped)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice(freshly squeezed)
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper(freshly ground)

Garnish

  • 4oz smoked salmon(thinly sliced or smoked salmon roses)
  • 8oz shrimp(cooked, peeled, and deveined)
  • 4oz crab meat(for decoration)
  • pcs dill sprigs(fresh, for garnish; null)
  • pcs lemon slices(for garnish; null)
  • pcs cucumber(thinly sliced, for garnish; null)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  1. Trim the crusts from the white bread slices.
  2. Arrange the bread slices in a mold or on a serving platter to form the initial layer of the Smörgåstårta. You may need to overlap or trim slices to fit your desired shape (e.g., a rectangle or round cake).

Make the Filling

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, picked crab meat, chopped smoked salmon, chopped dill, lemon juice, mayonnaise, and black pepper.
  2. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Assemble the Smörgåstårta

  1. Spread half of the seafood filling evenly over the first layer of bread.
  2. Add another layer of bread slices on top of the filling.
  3. Spread the remaining seafood filling over the second layer of bread.
  4. Top with a final layer of bread slices.
  5. Gently press down on the entire cake to compact the layers.
  6. Cover the Smörgåstårta with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to set.

Garnish and Serve

  1. Once chilled, carefully remove the Smörgåstårta from the mold or arrange it on a serving platter.
  2. Decorate the top and sides with thinly sliced smoked salmon, whole shrimp, small clusters of crab meat, dill sprigs, lemon slices, and cucumber slices.
  3. Slice the Smörgåstårta into portions using a sharp knife and serve immediately.
