Ingredients

Mustard-Crusted Bratwurst

  • 4 pcs bratwurst(Good quality German bratwurst)
  • 1/2 cup whole grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs(Panko or regular)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley(chopped, for the crust)
  • 1/2 tsp salt(to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper(freshly ground, to taste)

Sauerkraut Salad

  • 1lb sauerkraut(rinsed and well-drained)
  • 1/2 pcs apple(cored and finely diced (e.g., Granny Smith))
  • 1/4 cup red onion(finely diced)
  • 3 tbsp fresh dill(chopped)
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil(extra virgin)
  • 1 tsp sugar(optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1/4 tsp salt(to taste)
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper(freshly ground, to taste)

Instructions

Prepare the Bratwurst

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the whole grain mustard, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Place the bratwurst on the prepared baking sheet. Spread the mustard mixture evenly over the bratwurst.
  4. Sprinkle the bread crumbs over the mustard coating, pressing gently to adhere.

Bake the Bratwurst

  1. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bratwurst is cooked through and the crust is golden brown and slightly crispy. Turn halfway through for even browning.

Make the Sauerkraut Salad

  1. While the bratwurst is baking, prepare the sauerkraut salad. In a medium bowl, combine the rinsed and drained sauerkraut, diced apple, red onion, and chopped dill.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and sugar (if using).
  3. Pour the dressing over the sauerkraut mixture. Toss gently to combine.
  4. Season the sauerkraut salad with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve

  1. Serve the mustard-crusted bratwurst warm alongside the fresh sauerkraut salad.

Tips

  • For an extra crispy crust, toast the bread crumbs lightly before applying them to the bratwurst.
  • Ensure the oven temperature is accurate to achieve perfectly golden-brown bratwurst without burning the crust.
  • Allow the sauerkraut salad to sit for at least 10 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld.
