Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  1. 1In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. 3Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. 4Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare the Filling:

  1. 1In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly.

Assemble the Kolaches:

  1. 1Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a standard muffin tin.
  2. 2Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 16 equal pieces.
  3. 3Shape each piece of dough into a small disc and press it into the bottom and up the sides of each muffin cup, creating a well in the center.
  4. 4Spoon the apple cinnamon filling into the well of each dough cup.
  5. 5If desired, sprinkle streusel topping over the filling.

Bake and Serve:

  1. 1Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the kolaches are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  2. 2Let the kolaches cool in the muffin tin for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  3. 3Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
